Laila Majnu

This is an evergreen shrub with arching branches. I have seen plants three or four feet tall but it is reported to be able to grow to six feet tall. Typical plants have opposite, shiny green leaves with burgundy undersides. A variegated form is more common in the nursery trade. Inconspicuous white flowers are borne in the leaf axils. It grows best in part shade with moderate water. Most references say it is cold hardy to zone 10 but I have seen several reports of plants surviving temperatures as low as 30 degrees and recently saw a plant growing outdoors in Mercer Arboretum north of Houston, Texas. Reportedly, the sap is irrigating to some people.

Watering & Sunlight:     This is a shade loving plant. Sunlight availability of morning hours will also be an added advantage for its better growth. This plant likes misting, during summer. Regular misting of leaves will help the plant growth by making humid atmosphere. Moreover, such foliar spray will improve look of plants by cleaning of leaves. While misting, we should also ensure that plant does not receive excess water in soil. Watering of plants should be done only when the soil become fully dry.

Soil:   Drainage in pot is necessary by making sufficient holes in bottom. To make the ideal potting mix, 20 % drainage media (river sand/ Leca/ Perlite/ Pumice or rice husk- use any one of them) in potting mix should be available. In rest of the potting mix, we should mix Cocopeat (20 %), vermi – compost (20 %) and garden soil (40 %) in equal ratio. Use of Neem Cake (5-10%), will improve further quality of potting mix.
